How to Skate and Scoot:- The Ultimate Guide

To skate or to scoot, which one are you doing this weekend? Why not do both? It does not matter if you are an expert or just learning how to get started, this article will show you how to scoot and skate like the pros.

What do you need to wear for scooting and skating?

In any physical activity, safety is our first priority. It is common to fall and scrape your knees and elbows when you go cycling, skiing, skating, and scootering. That is why it is advisable to wear knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards to protect yourself. Wearing these protective gears can greatly reduce the chance of injury.

If you find protective gears too bulky, wearing thicker materials like denim that do not tear easily will be your best friend.

When it comes to clothing, there is no specific rule. Anything that provides comfort and flexibility will work. Because you will be using your legs in these activities, wear pants that are stretchy and allow you to move freely.

Long pants, hoodies, and long-sleeved tops are good choices but are not advisable in Kuwait’s heat. In this case, shorts and short-sleeved tops are recommended.

Now that you’re set on what to wear, let’s go to the basics of skateboarding and riding a kick scooter.

Skateboard or Kick Scooter?

Skateboarding requires more balance than riding a scooter because you do not have anything to hold on to. If you are not confident with that, a kick scooter will be best suited for you.

A kick scooter has a handlebar attached to the board or deck via a metal tube. The handlebar allows you to maneuver the scooter when changing directions.

Let’s get started. Here are the steps on how to ride a scooter.

  • Step 1. Before you begin, choose a long, flat, paved road. This helps you learn easily and ensures a smooth ride without scuffing or scrapes to your scooter.

  • Step 2. Place your weak leg on the scooter deck. Make sure that your foot on the board is pointed forward. Bend your knees.

  • Step 3. Slightly lean your body forward. Grip the handlebars.

Tip: Keep the front wheel straight and aligned to the scooter deck. This is the key to balancing in a kick scooter.

  • Step 4. Push yourself forward using your stronger leg.

  • Step 5. Once you gain momentum, move your kicking foot, and rest it behind your other foot.

  • Step 6. To stop, step on the brake that is located on the rear wheel with your kicking foot. Be careful not to brake abruptly. Doing so may cause you to topple over.

  • Step 7. To turn, slowly rotate the handlebars to the direction you wanted to go.

That is it! Now you know how to ride a kick scooter!

Reminders: Exercise precautions when skateboarding or scootering especially in urban places. Be mindful of your speed.

If you’re going to hit something, simply hop off your scooter. You should land so the scooter’s deck is in between your feet.
